Chemically, it is comprised of 82% monoterpenes, 8% sesquiterpenes and 4% alcohols.
In ancient times Frankincense was used as a Holy Anointing Oil, and a cure-all, used to enhance meditation and elevate spiritual consciousness. It was used to anoint the newborn sons of kings and priests, which is why it was brought to the baby Jesus by the Magi.
